The films selected for this edition of OLHO – video art cinema, deal with two genres that appear to be worlds apart: Ethnographic Documentary and Science Fiction. Both seek to document alternative lifestyles and means of existence, but from opposing angles. In visual ethnography, filming strategies and narratives target a visceral confrontation with reality, destabilizing the historically privileged position of western man and, in some cases, of man himself, in the representation of the world. On the other hand, by creating a connection with Science Fiction, artists come close to ‘creating worlds’, at first a literary device, then a cinematic one. Through the construction of believable stories, without denying the invention, these fictional realities become the truth condition for the storytelling.

Organized in sequences, the pieces trace journeys through uncharted lands. In Slow Action by Ben Rivers, in A Idade da Pedra by Ana Vaz, in the mutant/peculiar universe of Mihai Grecu and in Inferno, by Yael Bartana, the artists set the scene with historically undefined landscapes, be it in the remote past or distant future, tensioning mental spaces with their concrete anchorage in this world. By using concrete gestures that resonate in a poetic space, Anri Sala documents the actions of the mayor of Tirana, who paints the city to make it more habitable. Fiona Tan, on the other hand, edits archival footages in a rhythmic narrative that hints at a possible future underwater. In The End of the Day and The Beginning of the World, Shingo Yoshida crosses the 180th meridian, the line that separates today from tomorrow, leaving bread and meat as an offering to the crows in the land of Nanook of the North. Finally, in Sitting in Darkness by Graeme Arnfield, Grão by Letícia Ramos and Turtles All Way Down by Basim Magdy, the boundary between science and fiction emerges through mediating of our senses of sight and hearing with machines that see and hear from afar. In all the pieces, the link with the real is profound and occurs in a dazzling flash that exceeds the horizons of our imagination.
